Danish artist Camilla Storgaard is best known for her photos of Berlin, from the queer club scene to the urban everyday. But her recent work, Seen as Unseen , moves in a different space. Shot during a recent trip to Australia, the cross-country series captures Camilla's girlfriend nude against our landscape. The photos are a reaction against the traditional travel photos Camilla has been taking, and a way to present the human body as another natural element.

Hastily fashioning a terry-towelling shield to protect his manhood, he shot me a look of alarm. Our daughter, Orli, soon moved on to the more interesting pursuit of painting the bathroom tiles with sunscreen. But, just like that, the seed of doubt was sown. Was I too liberal in my attitude towards nudity? Or — as was certainly more likely — was my beloved husband, quite simply, a bit of a prude? My husband, dear man that he is, will run after me, pulling the curtains closed to protect my virtue. Why is it, then, that my husband thinks I need protection from the peeping Toms of suburbia? Given that he does, indeed, revel in my naked form, his stance on nudity is most likely a half-hearted throwback to the chivalrous notions of yesteryear, rather than a genuine wish to maintain respectability.

Throughout art history, the unclothed body has been a mainstay, where its symbolism ranges from life, vitality and innocence to heroism and spiritual emancipation. Photographer Ryan McGinley has repeatedly tapped into this well of symbolic meaning for his images. Naturism is a lifestyle of non-sexual social nudity , and the cultural movement which advocates for and defends that lifestyle. Both may also be referred to as nudism. Though the two terms are largely interchangeable, nudism emphasizes the practice of nudity, whereas naturism highlights an attitude favoring harmony with nature and respect for the environment, into which that practice is integrated. Ethical or philosophical nudism has a long history, with many advocates of the benefits of enjoying nature without clothing. At the turn of the 20th century, organizations emerged to promote social nudity and to establish private campgrounds and resorts for that purpose. Since the s, with the acceptance of public places for clothing-optional recreation, individuals who do not identify themselves as naturists or nudists have been able to casually participate in nude activities. Nude recreation opportunities vary widely around the world, from isolated places known mainly to locals through officially-designated nude beaches and parks and on to public spaces and buildings in some jurisdictions. Many contemporary naturists and naturist organisations advocate that the practice of social nudity should not be linked with sexual activity.
