We call these racial groups for brevity, realizing that Latinx is sometimes considered an ethnicity rather than a race. We examined racial differences separately for men and women and compared groups on attitudes and behaviors. For more details on our models, see the Technical Appendix at the end of this post. On some values and aspirations, racial groups seem remarkably alike. Racial groups also differ little in their ideas of the best age to do these things, with the average age seen as ideal for marriage between 25 and 28 for all groups and the average ideal age for having a first child between 27 and Also, racial groups have in common that, in each group, compared to women, men see a slightly higher age as appropriate for themselves to take on these roles. Some attitudes show significant differences by race. Focusing on racial differences, Whites and Blacks are similar in their response, and these two groups are most positive about sex without love, as the graph below shows.

A straight white girl can kiss a girl, like it, and still call herself straight—her boyfriend may even encourage her. But can straight white guys experience the same easy sexual fluidity? This book looks deep into a world where straight guy-on-guy action is a reality: there's fraternity and military hazing rituals; online personal ads, where straight men seek other straight men to masturbate with; and straight men frequenting public restrooms for sexual encounters with other men. For the author, these sexual practices reveal a unique social space where straight white men can, and do, have sex For the author, these sexual practices reveal a unique social space where straight white men can, and do, have sex with other straight white men; in fact, to do so reaffirms rather than challenges their gender and racial identity. The book illustrates that sex between straight white men allows them to leverage whiteness and masculinity to authenticate their heterosexuality in the context of sex with men. By understanding their same-sex sexual practice as meaningless, accidental, or even necessary, straight white men can perform homosexual contact in heterosexual ways. These sex acts are not slippages into a queer way of being or expressions of a desired but unarticulated gay identity. Instead they reveal the fluidity and complexity that characterizes all human sexual desire. The book's analysis offers a new way to think about heterosexuality, not as the opposite or absence of homosexuality, but as its own unique mode of engaging in homosexual sex, a mode characterized by pretense, dis-identification and racial and heterosexual privilege.
While authorities said Atlanta-area spa shooting suspect Robert Aaron Long, 21, told investigators he was motivated by "sexual addiction" and claimed he had no racial motivation, health specialists say the explanation falls short. Jay Baker, a spokesman for the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, said Long — who is accused of killing eight people , six of them Asian women — indicated that the spas were "a temptation for him that he wanted to eliminate. White men have traditionally been given a pass when they say it — and have the privilege of overlooking how race is a factor, experts say. The defense of sex addiction itself, Alexander said, is a highly controversial one as those in the fields of psychology, psychiatry and sex research continue to debate whether to formally recognize it. Currently, the idea that sex addiction is a disorder is not supported by research, nor is it accepted as a clinical diagnosis, she said. Though the American Psychiatric Association added the concept of sexual addiction to its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in , it later retracted the term and has since rejected the addition of the idea to its later editions including the DSM—5, which is widely seen as the definitive resource on mental disorders, on the basis of a lack of supporting evidence. In examining acts of gender-based violence, Alexander said such attacks often occur at the intersection of misogyny, racism, xenophobia and homophobia.
In a Bedfordshire nightclub, white couples queue to have sex with black men. Meanwhile, black women are routinely snubbed on dating sites. Why do racial stereotypes persist when it comes to sex? My friend Miranda has accompanied me here for moral support. We scale a no-frills metal staircase at the end of an alleyway behind the high street, where a weary blond woman is ruling a domain of coats, cash and lists. She has a defeated manner, like the only sober person at a party when everyone is drunk. I have no idea why I decided to make myself look so dowdy. Miranda is doing much better; she has obediently put on a basque, along with a skirt much shorter than mine, and boots that elongate her long legs. It was the easiest way of manipulating our actual names without revealing the fact that we are both black. His presence is comforting; he seems like an island of sanity in a sea of grotesque chaos.
